How to optimise your profile for LinkedIn search
Recruiters often search LinkedIn using keywords rather than names. Think about the words employers use when advertising your ideal role and make sure these appear naturally throughout your headline, about section, work experience and skills section.
- Use industry-specific keywords throughout your profile
- Include software, certifications and technical skills
- Match terminology used in job adverts
- Complete your Skills section
- Turn on “Open to Work” (if appropriate)
Update your headline
Rather than simply listing your current job title as an Aircraft Engineer in your headline, we recommend you use your headline to highlight your expertise, specialisms and the value you bring.
Example:
Licenced Aircraft Engineer | B1.3 | AW139 | Part-145 | 10+ Years in Helicopter Maintenance
The About Section
Your about section is your opportunity to introduce yourself beyond your job titles. Rather than repeating your CV, tell your professional story and explain the value you bring.
- What you specialise in
- Industries you’ve worked in
- Key achievements
- What opportunities you’re interested in
Skills Section
LinkedIn’s skills section helps recruiters discover your profile when searching for candidates. Add a mix of technical, industry-specific, and transferable skills, and keep them up to date as your experience grows.
Prioritise your three most relevant skills, as these are displayed prominently on your profile. Encourage colleagues to endorse your skills where appropriate to add further credibility.
Demonstrate your achievements with numbers rather than words e.g.:
❌ Managed a team of engineers.
✅ Led a team of eight engineers delivering maintenance projects ahead of schedule.
Visuals Section
Rather than uploading just photos to the visuals section, we would suggest that you include:
- Presentations
- Certifications
- Licences
- Project photos
- Portfolios
- Published articles
- Conference presentations
For aviation professionals:
- Aircraft type ratings
- Safety awards
- Training certificates
Be active on LinkedIn
This didn’t matter nearly as much a few years ago; however, recruiters notice active users on LinkedIn, although it doesn’t mean you have to post daily.
We recommend that you:
- Comment on industry news
- Share achievements
- Celebrate certifications
- Follow companies
- Engage with aviation organisations
- Post occasionally
Add AI guidance
AI tools can help you improve your LinkedIn profile by refining your wording or suggesting ways to present your achievements more clearly. However, make sure your profile reflects your genuine experience and expertise – recruiters value authenticity.
Your LinkedIn profile should be treated as a living professional portfolio rather than an online CV. Keeping it up to date, highlighting measurable achievements and engaging with your industry can make you more visible to recruiters and help you build valuable professional connections.
Even if you’re not actively looking for a new role, spending just 30 minutes reviewing your profile every few months can ensure you’re ready when the right opportunity comes along.
